My COVID-19 Vaccine Experience with Occupational Therapist Deborah Spivak
As Ontarians continue their efforts to protect themselves and their communities from COVID-19, vaccines offer hope during a challenging time for many. Many frontline health care providers at VHA Home HealthCare have had the opportunity to receive their vaccine and want to share their experience to help others make informed decisions.
Here’s what Deborah Spivak, an Occupational Therapist working in York Region, had to say about her vaccine experience:
“I went to get my COVID-19 vaccine the very first day I was eligible. I received my COVID-19 vaccine because I want to do as much as I can to protect the vulnerable clients I serve as well as my family and because I believe the vaccine is safe and effective. In my family, I have the most high-risk job. I see many of my clients the day they come home from hospital. My parents are seniors and my sister works in a hospital and they have also received their COVID-19 vaccines. It was a celebration for all of us and our family when we received our first doses.
Getting my vaccine was a completely positive experience and the easiest medical procedure I’ve ever gone through. The staff at the clinics were professional, friendly, and made sure I was well looked after throughout my visit. The main side effect that appeared for me was a sore arm on the side I received my shot for a few days afterwards.
I believe that we all have a number of ways to help ourselves stay safe in our community: social distancing, washing our hands, and wearing our Personal Protective Equipment. The vaccine is another important way we can all help beat the COVID-19 pandemic. To me, it’s a win-win.”
