At Home with VHA tells the stories of those who make up VHA. In every role and across every team, our staff and service providers create possibilities for more independence. Meet Joie Francisco, Personal Support Care Team Coach and Personal Support Worker (PSW) who works in Toronto providing care for our clients.

How long have you been a PSW?

I have been a PSW since 2012. To be exact I started in mid-September 2012, so it’s almost my 10-year anniversary with VHA and I’ve loved every moment of it.

When did you become a care team coach?

I was fortunate enough to become a PS Care Team Coach in 2016. It has been a great opportunity for me.

What is your approach to providing care?

Well, my approach is simple. I always aim to be sincere and genuine with my clients to show them how much I care for them. I treat every client as part of my own family to work with diligence, and listen attentively to their unique needs.

What are your main goals when acting as  a coach and mentor to less experienced PSWs?

My essential goal as a coach is making sure my teammates and fellow personal support worker colleagues know that I am always ready to listen, impart my knowledge and give a lending hand if necessary.

What motivates you?

I find enjoyment, fulfillment, and interest in my field as a Personal Support Worker. I’m motivated to go above and beyond for others. I feel that I serve my purpose in life every time I see my clients and families happy at the end of my visit. I know they appreciate my presence and the care I deliver to each and every client, whom I treat as my own grandparents.

What do you like most about working in the community?

What I like most about working in the community is that the work is very challenging. Sometimes factors like weather and transportation can be tough, but it does not hinder or stop me from doing my job. I also enjoy that by working in the community, I’ve learned so much about different cultures and I’ve been able to explore various traditions throughout the communities I serve. Working in my community provides me with a sense of accomplishment. Even the smallest task can make a big difference. VHA is my second family and I consider myself blessed to work with so many talented individuals.
