Healthcare Response Unit

In 2021, in response to the changing needs of Ontario’s healthcare system and the urgency of the provincial vaccine rollout in the wake of a COVID-19 third wave, VHA Home HealthCare (VHA) created THRU, which stands for Tactical HealthCare Response Unit.

THRU is a strategic team of experienced nurses, pharmacists, and non-clinical staff who can urgently respond to community health needs and challenges anywhere in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

THRU has been conducting Wellness Clinics since April 2022, engaging various communities in public health, wellness, and promotion. We offer a variety of Wellness Clinic options that our nurses and pharmacists specialize in to target your specified needs.

Services provided as part of the Wellness Clinics can vary depending on your needs. Some services could include: Blood pressure checks, blood glucose checks, cancer screening education, medication management, safe medication disposal, medication adherence, and more. Our clinicians provide evidence-based counselling and advice on lifestyle and diet, among others.

From any transitional setting whether it be from hospital to home or to long-term care, THRU can be there to support the journey for you and your clients every step of the way, optimizing your outcomes and improving the health and well-being of all people.

THRU offers the comprehensive planning, education, and multidisciplinary communication and coordination required for successful care transitions.

We understand the power of collective impact and seek to work together with you from start to finish to design a robust, integrated care project that works for you and your clients.

VHA continues to be a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO), implementing Best Practice Guidelines and providing the highest level of professional practice and delivering evidence-based care across all disciplines.

THRU provided over 50,000 vaccinations in 2021. We have hosted mass immunization clinics and mobile pop-ups, administered vaccines in Toronto Seniors Housing (TSHC) buildings, Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs), provided vaccines for homebound clients and much more!

THRU has hosted and provided leadership at Testing and Assessment Centres and made referrals for COVID-19 antiviral treatment. We are currently implementing multiple COVID-19, Cough, Flu Care Clinics throughout the GTA.

The pandemic created an opportunity to do health care virtually and THRU is well equipped to support your clients’ remote patient monitoring needs for equitable, barrier-free access to a healthcare provider.

Our clinicians are trained to conduct assessments and follow ups for your clients to reduce Emergency Department visits and bridge connections to provide the needed support between primary care, the client/caregiver, and the rest of the care team.
