Senior Research Associate and Mental Health Research Lead

Sonia Nizzer is a Senior Research Associate & Mental Health Research Lead at VHA Home HealthCare.

She is a registered social worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and holds a Master’s degree from the University of Windsor.

She has over 14 years of experience supporting clients, caregivers and point-of-care staff in the home and community sector. Before transitioning into a research role, her direct practice focused on improving maternal-health outcomes, newcomer mental health, and coordinated community responses to support survivors of domestic violence.

As a qualitative home care researcher, her current research seeks to understand the intersection of work and wellbeing amongst the home and community care workforce. Her upcoming work will explore the impact of a co-designed reporting and response framework to support personal support workers experiencing workplace violence and harassment during care. Her passions lie in addressing work precarity and structural barriers, community mental health, and the inclusion of community-based and arts-informed research approaches.
